The mountainous terrain of Nandi Hills was the backdrop of Mbarak’s youth growing up in Kenya, East Africa. He comes from the Kalenjin tribe - which produces the world’s top runners. As a child, he used to hide from his teachers during physical education class to avoid running laps. However, he happily ran 6 miles daily to and from school each day. New Mexico’s mountainous terrain and 300 days of sunshine have been home for Mbarak for 33 years. He began his professional running career after college in 1994 and competed professionally for 21 years across the globe.

As Head Distance Coach for the United Arab Emirates National Team in Dubai, UAE, Mbarak led his team to win the Gulf States Cross Country Championships in 2008 and 2009. He has over 25 years of experience in coordinating, designing, and implementing training plans for recreational runners and fellow professional athletes. He Co-Directed and Coached Camp Marafiki- an annual week-long running camp in Santa Fe, New Mexico that brought together athletes from across the country to live and train with elite Kenyan runners. Being self-coached for the majority of his professional career, Mbarak is passionate about the sport of running and assisting others with goal attainment. He also enjoys sharing his experiences and promoting physical health through various speaking engagements over the years. For the last seven years, he has enjoyed coaching high school track and cross country in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
